iPhone X screen: differences between OEM, OLED & LCD
Today, the LCD-Phone team carried out an experiment to compare OLED and LCD screens to give you all the information you need about these displays. With the release of the iPhone X, Apple has introduced us to a new type of screen. First, we'll define the two types of screen and then compare them. The LCD screen is made up of 4 different layers: the glass, the touch, the display and the backlight. The OLED screen, on the other hand, consists mainly of 3 layers: the glass, the touch and the display. As a result, the two screens differ: OLED no longer has a backlight layer, as the display itself diffuses the light. As a result, it only displays light when it's needed (for example, when the iPhone is switched on, you only see the apple in the middle - the rest of the screen remains black with no light at all). This saves as much battery power as possible, unlike LCD, which always lights up completely. The color difference When comparing the display colors of the screens, there's no obvious difference between original and OEM OLEDs. But in the comparison with LCD, the color of the LCD screen is dark and not very sharp.
Thickness difference
A. After measuring the thickness of the four screens after installation, we can see that the original is the thinnest screen, the second is the OEM. The LCD screen is thicker than the OLED.
B. We then measured the weight of the three displays. As you can see, the OEM weighs 35.9 g, the OLED weighs 37.5 g, while the weight of the LCD is 44.7 g.
C. The IC module on OLED and OEM presents a strong similarity, but due to the different screen technology, the LCD screen is different from the others as we can see on the following picture.
Function tests
A. In general, the 3D touch function on OEM, OLED and LCD screens works correctly. However, this function may not work with a single finger when you put the phone on the desk for all screen types.
B. By dragging the application icon across the screen to test touch function, OLED and OEM are similar, while LCD is less sensitive.
Conclusion:
For an end consumer, it may be difficult to see the differences, but for professionals like LCD-Phone, these small details remain visible.
After our various tests, we conclude that the OLED screen is a little thinner because of its 3 layers, compared with LCD with its 4 layers. What's more, there's a difference between OLED and LCD in terms of light.
